Indoor Air Quality - What the Law Requires

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires that employers, provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk to health.
  • The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) requires risk assessment and prevention of exposure to substances hazardous to health by using suitable control measures which include general ventilation.
  • The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, requires that mechanical ventilation systems used for providing general ventilation are maintained including cleaned as appropriate, in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair. Regulations also require that you ensure effective ventilation for any enclosed workplace by providing a sufficient quantity of fresh or purified air.
