Whatever commercial facility you operate, maintaining internal temperature is critical to the productivity of your staff and the comfort of your customers.
Large entrance doorways can make this pretty challenging to achieve, with high footfall causing the ingress of outdoor air.
When one of the UK’s busiest airports approached us with this problem, the CPA team visited their site to find the right solution.
Belfast International Airport is Northern Ireland’s principal airport, often welcoming over 6,000,000 passengers per year.
At the airport, high footfall and continuous use of terminal doors meant it was very difficult to sustain a comfortable temperature in the terminal building.
This temperature loss affected overall thermal comfort, compromised staff and passenger comfort, and resulted in high energy costs.
They approached CPA, looking for an efficient, cost-saving solution that prioritised these challenges.
After carrying out a thorough site survey, the CPA team identified the Enershield Air Barrier as the optimal solution, to be installed above each doorway. Designed and fitted with two auto-actuators would mean that the units only come into operation when the doors were opened.
So how do Enershield Air Barriers work?
They create an effective seal on doorways by re-circulating the facility air in a laminar (smooth) flow across an open doorway.
The kinetic energy within the moving air generates a barrier, preventing leakage of air between areas with different pressures and climates. The more laminar the airflow, the more difficult it is for outside air to penetrate the barrier.
Open doors account for a considerable amount of the energy loss in a building. Enershield Air Barriers can reduce heat loss through the door by as much as 90%, translating into substantial energy savings. It also creates a more comfortable environment for employees and customers, leading to increased productivity throughout your team.

Our team recorded the temperature within a one-metre range of the entrances and studied both doors, one with the air barrier turned on and the other off.
With the unprotected door open, there was a sudden thermal exchange, and the internal temperature fell to less than 10°.
In contrast, on the protected doorway, the set point temperature remained at over 16° with the door open, demonstrating the Air Barrier’s capability to establish an effective door seal.
In addition, the Air Barrier prevents the ingress of smoke, odours and insects, improving the air quality and general hygiene of the facility.
